ZVI / EZVI Remediation

Zero-valent iron for contaminated land treatment.

ZVI and EZVI (Emulsified Zero-Valent Iron) technologies for in-situ remediation of chlorinated solvent contamination, heavy metals and industrial pollutants. Single injection, long-term sustained treatment. Suited for brownfield development, industrial sites and groundwater clean-up.

What It Is

Chemical reduction plus biological enhancement.

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) degrades contaminants through chemical reduction — iron particles donate electrons to break down chlorinated solvents such as TCE and PCE into harmless ethene. EZVI (Emulsified ZVI) advances this by encapsulating iron particles in a vegetable oil emulsion. The oil film attracts and concentrates DNAPL contaminants, which then diffuse into the aqueous phase to contact the iron and undergo dechlorination.

EZVI delivers a dual mechanism: chemical reduction acts rapidly while the vegetable oil slowly releases electron donors to support anaerobic microbial activity — providing long-term sustained remediation after a single injection event. The oil film also protects the iron from oxidation, extending its reactive lifespan in the subsurface significantly beyond standard ZVI.

Why It Matters

Why ZVI and EZVI for UK brownfield remediation.

DNAPL Source Zones

EZVI directly accesses dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zones that standard ZVI cannot reach. The oil encapsulation concentrates chlorinated contaminants at the iron surface for maximum dechlorination efficiency.

Brownfield Development

The UK has over 300,000 potentially contaminated sites. In-situ ZVI treatment is non-disruptive — no excavation, no soil removal — making it ideal for brownfield redevelopment programmes.

Long-Term Treatment

A single EZVI injection event supports ongoing remediation — the oil phase feeds anaerobic bacteria that continue breaking down contaminants long after the initial chemical reduction phase.

Broad Contaminant Range

Effective against TCE, PCE, cis-1,2-DCE and vinyl chloride — the most common chlorinated solvent contaminants found on UK industrial and former manufacturing sites.
