Background
An operating landfill generating approximately 11.8 tons of leachate annually (0.011–0.022 wt% solids, with minor non-aqueous phase liquids) had historically relied on costly off-site treatment.
Technology Used
Integrated self-activated persulfate oxidation system with enhanced biological remediation
Approach
In-situ chemical oxidation was combined with biological treatment to address the leachate without off-site transport.
Results
- All monitored contaminants achieved removal in short timeframes
- Treatment occurred without heat generation or significant solid formation
- No pollution rebound observed
