Industrial Plant

Chlorinated-solvent source and plume remediation

01

Former manufacturing facility, South Carolina

Western South Carolina, USA

Background

A now-closed manufacturing facility released significant PCE and TCE into unsaturated and saturated soil and groundwater.

Technology Used

EZVI injection combined with anaerobic bioremediation

Approach

EZVI was injected to drive dechlorination directly in the source area, supported by ongoing anaerobic biological activity.

Results

  • Source-area groundwater CVOCs decreased approximately 20% overall after 18 months, with ~50% average removal in three monitoring wells
  • A further 6 months of treatment reduced soil CVOC concentrations by over 90% with no rebound
02

Former industrial site, Midwest US

Midwestern United States

Background

A high-permeability aquifer at 7–14 ft depth held severe multi-contaminant pollution, with organic peat layers absorbing pollutants and risking long-term rebound.

Technology Used

In-situ self-activated chemical oxidation

Approach

Oxidant was dosed separately for the peat layer (10 wt%) and the aquifer (2 wt%) to match each zone's organic demand.

Results

  • Peat layer achieved over 96% pollutant removal
  • Aquifer achieved over 95% removal
  • Treatment cost of $402/m²
03

Manufacturing facility source & plume remediation, New Jersey

New Jersey, USA

Background

Long-term TCE discharge from a manufacturing facility contaminated soil and groundwater, with initial TCE concentrations of 99.1 mg/L.

Technology Used

EZVI, ZVI and P-IR injections for chemical reduction, combined with biochemical processes

Approach

A combined chemical-reduction programme targeted both the source area and the downgradient plume.

Results

  • After two years, multiple monitoring wells showed TCE below detection limits
  • Others showed 58–99% concentration reductions
  • Sustained anaerobic conditions prevented rebound
